~Summer Holiday~
Everyone takes a holiday during the summer vacation I think.
I know we did when I was young. Yellowstone Park or Niagara
Falls, some great places. I remember we went to Billings,
Montana and seeing a ghost town out there. We specially
liked Mt. Rushmore with the presidents headscarved into the
side of the mountain. That was amazing to see. I have some
old photos of them making that and I will have to dig them out its
really interesting to see all the things they did to be able to do that.
I am not sure if my Grandfather was a surveyor on that or not..
From these pictures even down to the dimensions of parts is
amazing...
Donnie & Dawn are taking their yearly trek up into Canada to go
fishing. They drive up through Sault Ste. Marie and then go to a
place where the get on a small plane that fly's them in to a camp
site. It has a cabin, generator and outdoor shower and toilet. grill
and a boat and motor..They take ice in a chest and I think they
come every 3 days and replace the ice and check on you. They
love it.. They have seen bear, moose, and Donnie says the
biggest fish anywhere. Some of the lakes are trophy lakes that the
fish have to be a certain size before you can keep them..They
have a really good time. The picture up top is Donnie with a
Northern Pike he caught. Nice fish.
I tried the camping bit with David..we went only 15 miles from
home out to Ottawa Lake.. great spot.. the campsite was right
next to the water and we just kept the boat right there. We had
a new tent we bought..set it all up and tried to have a good time.
It was the most horrible camping experience I had ever been on.
The first day there was great..sunny and warm. The 2nd day..
well THATS when the rain started..well we figgured ok- one day
of rain..we sat it out.. the 3 rd day it rained off and on.. but thats
when it started getting COLD. This was spring..opening of fishing.
so was still cool..but this cold? Well I thought I was gonna freeze
to death...
We had a nice size tent.. and we had 2 sleeping bags that we
zipped together to make one big bag.. It was SO cold that we
had to sleep smack up against each other and keep the bag
tight up around our necks or feel a horrible COLD draft.. When
one of us wanted to move..we would nudge the other and say
"moving" and we each would roll at the same time so as not
to make any drafts or cold spots.. Well .. THIS was just COLD.
We woke the next morning to more rain, cold..and I sat there
under the tarp we had over the grill pit..with chairs around it.
Some friends of ours came out to visit and to see if we were
Some friends of ours came out to visit and to see if we were
sticking this awful camping trip out.. I sat there and played
with a drip as it hit the ground to make a little trough for it to
flow off and away from us..Freezing, wet, and miserable..I
looked at everyone, stood up and told them I was going home.
I was 15 miles away and I could be toasty warm, dry and eat
looked at everyone, stood up and told them I was going home.
I was 15 miles away and I could be toasty warm, dry and eat
something alot better than soggy wet stuff. We all looked at
each other..David didn't say a word..but walked over and
started to pack up the stuff from inside the tent..and load the
car..told me to drive home with his friends wife..that they
would take the truck and load up the boat and meet us back
in town.. You KNOW he had to tell me TWICE yes? It was
awful... How we even managed to stay for 3 days was amazing.
But I have to admit..the fishing was great..Doesnt matter to
fish I guess how cool it is..or that idiot fishermen are out in boats
sitting in the rain trying to catch them... I was NOT one of them.
This camping idiot stayed as warm as I could by that fire and
trying to keep it going...That was the first of TWO camping trips
the 2nd one? well I will write about it another time..it was a heck
of a vacation too ...:-)
Speaking of trips.. Its time to make that nightly trip out to see
where Raelynn put those raspberry cookies. lol..They are dry
and warm too lol.. so am I..it was really hot out today but it
wasnt too bad in here. I think I hear those cookies yellin at me.
so its that time.. Hittin publish...nitey nite... :-)
Y'all have a good one now, Y'hear? love ya.. and thanks.. ;-)
Always, Lois ****
May God Bless you today,
I'm so honored to call you friend,
I pray the Lord will keep you safe,
Until I write again...

Summers in the middle-west: I grew up in Kansas City in the era when there were still streetcars. I did not own a car until I was about 26 in New York City. In KC we had a family car and if I was going out I would ask to use it. The first time, I visited a family where each kid had a car was in Northeast switzerland. In Appenzell, each kid had a car but the parents didn't drive. My favorite place to summer is New York City - because there is so much to do. It is hot and humid, but most of the venues are air-conditioned.

Being cold and wet is the worst sort of camping. It sounds funny, but it is a lot easier when there is dry snow on the ground and the temperature stays in the mid to high 20s. You can move around freely, staying warm and dry. Thick dry snow is quite comfortable to sleep on. I still hike and backpack reguularly with my brother in law and can;t imagine wanting to stop. Of course, some of my experiences have been bad ones, but they are a great minority.
We will be going to own own lake place next week, with a side trip to Quebec. The fishing is good, but not like what you describe. Dozing off to wood ans hermit thrushes, veeries, and white throated sparrows, followed by a night of loons and barred owls, is the best way to sleep.
I grew up about 35 miles north of NYC on a commuter train line, and have to say that I hated to visit New York in the summer. It always seemed hot and dirty and miserable. I much preferred going in the fall. Even places like the Museum of Natural History and the Cloisters were uncomfortable in the summer, although MOMA and the Hirshhorn were delightful. I do have great menories of the NY World's fair, the Bronx Zoo, and Jones Beach in the summer, but they were not in Manhattan. I also used to love going to Canal Street with my father for pick up electronic components for my projects.

Dear lois,
We used to camp, but it is SO much easier and warmer in a trailer (we call them "caravans") and the tent was coming apart at the seams, so our holidays lately were in the 'van.
Now, it's holiday all the time, living right in the middle of Exmoor, so we don't need a tent or a van!!
Take care, Hon, thanks for the story, lots of love and hugs from
Raife

Good Morning :-)
I am not a bug person or wild wild animal person but I love the outdoors. trailer camping is a good way for me to rough it. Waking up to weird sounds at night or feel something crawl across your feet ..not good.. lol.
But the waking up and the taste of the food outdoors..and seeing that lake, a boat waiting ..well.. thats a good thing :-) I didnt even HAVE to call the fish, they were so hungry!!! :-) David appreciated that.. I bet he STILL calls the fish LOL...
Hope y'all have a great day... :-)
So nice to hear from you.. thanks..

I think I can pretty much guarantee that if you go camping nothing will crawl across your feet.

well depends where you are camping..and in what !! I slept on the beach in Hawaii..and stuff crawled across my feet! lol. Needless to say that was a ONE time occurance lol. I just dont like the idea of tent camping, they can get ripped open. lol.. trailer camping for me or a cabin would be ok. :-)
Hope your having a good day Gray :-) Ive been scanning photos for the blog.. :-D
