~Mom's Day Today~
Mom's day today and I thought I would put some of my
mom and my grandmothers. I told a friend besides
having me all in common they all were excellent cooks.
My mom..was one of the best. and the thing was when
she was cooking those delicious meals..you didn't even
really notice it because she kept everything washed up as
she went along.. No matter what was left over or how much
was left she kept it.. She could make the best saffron buns
in the world.. My cousin June made them for me after my
mom passed. I sure miss them. Her baking of pies and
breads and cookies and cakes couldn't be matched by
anyone..She kept 3 different kinds of cookies all the
time, "just in case someone stops by for coffee" that was
her reason for baking. When my ex and I moved up there
she kept David well supplied in fresh bread and of course
his favorite brownies..There was never a time there was
not a container of them in the fridge..She would call and
tell me to send David by to pick up a loaf of fresh bread..
she even sliced it for him..Each one was perfectly even.
I think she knew I wasn't the best bread slicer :-)
This is Gramma Wales, my mothers mother..Her name was
This is Gramma Wales, my mothers mother..Her name was
Beatrice Violet...and she was born and raised in England.
She was the best cook and for a tiny woman very strong.. I
remember one day out at the cottage, we all were there, and
I had dropped a towel in the lake and was trying to wring it
out and Gramma took it from me telling me her hands were
stronger than mine.. I watched as she twisted that towel and
then opened it back up and I felt it..was almost dry, I was in
awe of how dry it was.. When I went off to college, when I came
home on the weekends, by then my gramma lived in a small
little 3 room apartment that she loved. She had a rocking chair
by the window that she sat in all the time. When Gramma knew
I was coming home she would phone and tell me she had made
some of my very best favorite green split pea soup. She made
the VERY best and I did not waste any time going down there
to taste some of that excellent soup.. One of the specialities
of both my mom and gramma were pastys..THAT is good food.
I used to make them but I changed mine from pastys to a meat
pie and its good too.. Pasty's are a favorite all over the UP of
Michigan..Most towns have Pasty Shops..some you can even
order online. Pastys are an English tradition, as the coal miners
used to take them in their lunch pails..theyre good hot but even
better cold. I love them..
was a lovely woman with snow white hair and blue eyes and a
smile with a gold tooth, like my dad had as well.. This photo was
taken on her 50th wedding anniversary and I cropped it to just
have her photo. Her skin was so white and almost transparent,
her fingers were all bent from the arthritis she had in them, but
it didn't stop her from doing her tatting or crocheting or knitting.
She was very skilled in tatting and I have some handkerchiefs
that she put the tatting on, they are quite lovely. I have some of
her cook books dating back to 1920's.. She belonged to a lot
of the ladies groups and did a lot of entertaining. The one food
I especially liked that she made was Chop Suey, she made some
of the most tastiest of any ive had. I did NOT tell my mom this
though.. Cooking back then was something all women HAD to
be very good at, and most of them were and each had their
specialty. I have a few cook books from the clubs my mom and
gramma belonged to, and the recipes in them..theyre the
very best. I should put them all into one. :-)
As I was sitting here writing this I heard a noise out side and
there is Robert cutting my grass. He did front, back , sides,
all of it..He came in for me to sign the workpaper and told
me about his new riding mower he got..hes very pleased
with it.and with a yard the size of mine a rider is best.. He
drew my attention to his face, as he has a mustache and
gotee. I looked and it was darker..I asked what he did and
he said he got tired of the gray, it was snow white before.
I had to be honest, and I told him it looked great but it did
look good white too I thought and made his crystal blue
eyes show up better..He smiled. He did look younger, I
did tell him that too, which I think he was hoping to hear. He
did a good job on the yard, I hope the COA pays him enough
the price of gas is awful.
Im starved and havent eaten all day. I need to get one of those
old recipe books and make something.. I wish I had an oven I
sure would make myself a meat pie. I know how to make a
crust from scratch, I got lazy and started using the pre made
ones, but they are good too. Meat pie sounds good, but I am
hungry now not in 3 hours ..that's my problem I wait till I get
super hungry and then don't want to take the time to fix a good
supper..oh well..the joys of the microwave. I have no idea what
I will fix, anything I can find I think, then its TV time, and time
to say "Nitey Nite"
Always, Lois ****
God Bless you is my prayer today,
I'm so honored to call you "friend";
I pray the Lord will keep you safe
until I write again..

Ui, Honey,
Love the pics and the memories of good food!! I think pasties are of Cornish origin. The tin miners there used to have them. I had a traditional one for lunch the other day, when we were in Barnstaple for the Monthly shopping trip, and very good it was, too.
I've posted on your previous blogs!!! Just so's I don't get in the wrong box!!! ;o)
Take care, Honey. L.O.L. & G.B.H. from
