~Pasty's AGAIN~ :-)
I clicked on it that it went to a page that said it didn't work..I
changed it..but for some reason it wont change it to the lower
HTML ..its in caps and shouldn't be.. I sent word to the Pasty
people that I was going to mention their great pastys. Charlie
who replied to me informed me of the bad link.. I tried to fix it..but well
Im not good at this stuff.. but I hope you try their pastys.. they are
really good..and I hope the wrong way of putting the link that you
can still find your way to their great site, look down at the bottom
if you get the error page and it will direct you.. I spend lots of time there
reading the comments and of course looking at the great photos of
the area I know so well and I really miss it up there.. I did borrow a
photo but I had to so I hope Charlie understands. The one up top here
just fits it here today too ! I had to smile when I saw that photo, its
from their site..We are under a snow advisory AGAIN !
Here is a link again to Pasty Central or type that into your browser..

Copper Harbor, where Calumet is, is a wonderful place..they have
copper mines.. where in Iron River where I was raised they had the
iron ore ones.. When my grandfather came over..he came with his
2 brothers..and my grammas brother..Leonard and his wife Annie..
They moved on up to the Copper Country as its called. I Remember
many trips up to see them.. We had gone up to Houghton to see
the Ice sculptures.. they are amazing.. and they had a TON of snow.
When I looked at the other cars.. all the antennas were pulled all the
way up with flags on the ends.. I asked my dad..why didn't we have a
flag on ours like that.. Dad said "Lois, they get a lot more snow than
we do..even though we get alot..but see the corner? you cant see the
cars coming the other way..what do you see?" .. well of course ! I
saw the FLAG!.. It was to help drivers know other cars were around..
Many of the houses had doors on the 2nd story..the snow would get
so deep..that instead of shoveling would use the upstairs door way..
lay a board across the snow..and they could get out of the houses..
living in snow country you have to adapt, which is what they do up
there.. The big university is there MIT..my grandfather, Dads..went
to college there, some of his mining books etc are on display there
so Im told.. My Dad donated them when Grandfather died.. He was
one of the first surveyors of the roads and a great mining engineer.
MIT is/ was his alma mater.. Houghton is a great town, so is the
town of Hancock right across the river..Its beautiful up there and
the drive there from Iron River is wonderful.. a lot of it is by the
lake, down in L'Anse.. There is a great Indian burial ground there,
I think I have put the photos here of it.. And one of the best things
of course are all the Pasty shops and good places to eat.. There
is a place has killer cinnamon rolls in L'Anse I think.. If you want a
nice great vacation...well you know where I would send you..yup..
right up to Upper Michigan..BUT.. you have to stop by and pick
me up first so I can go along.. Deal? :-)
Robert came yesterday and blew the snow..hes having some
health problems that I hope he can get cleared up..The Drs don't
seem to know what is wrong.. I was the 3rd on his list of 12 to do.
I wish he could have used that snow blower on the inside of my
porch..its COVERED in snow.. As hard as its snowing right now
while I write this..Robert may have to come back tomorrow..all
his hard work will have to be redone.. I was glad to hear that they
had given him a raise..he sure deserves it for the work he does.
I know its easy with a snow blower but..you still got to push it.. He
works for his pay..
Im going to work on getting out this chair for today and do some
knitting.. I did finish that dish cloth.. I will take a photo tomorrow and
show you that I did...Maybe I can scan it.. I want to make a afghan
but I really don't know if I can..my hands get really tired when I steady
knit, then they ache.. Im so glad they don't ache when Im getting a
snack..hmmm..maybe that's the time they SHOULDNT work :-) then
I couldn't pick up that food and put it in my mouth !!! :-) well this
GORGEOUS WEEBLE has to say "nitey nite"... :-)
Y'all have a good one now, Y'hear? love ya and thanks :-)
ALways, Lois ****
God Bless you, is my prayer today,
I'm so honored to call you "friend";
I pray the Lord will keep you safe,
Until I write again.....

Hi, Honey,
The link works fine. I was browsing the list of places where orders came from. The big surprise is just how many English town names there are in the States and particularly in the U.P.
I know you-all have trouble with Worcester - its Wooss-tuh. In the war, when I was a kid traveling on our London subway - the Underground, I heard two U.S. servicemen reading the station names from the route map in the car and they were having trouble with Leicester Square. To them it was Lie-ses-ter. To us it is Less-tuh.
Hope you are managing to keep warm with all that snow. We have had another beautiful, warm day of un-clouded, blue skies. A hard frost last night, but no snow.
An old, local farmer told me in Church the other day that February would either be "black" or "white", meaning either heavy rain (February Fill-dyke) or heavy snow. I'm not sure what he calls this present weather?!
Take care, Honey,

A mining story:
A Mr. Carter of Kirkwood, Mo. had the copywright on the word Hydramatic which referred to a method of mining using water pressure. GM wanted to use the word as a name on its new automatic transmission in 1940 for the Oldsmobile. A deal was worked out which made the Carter family a comfortable living for many years.
