~A Favorite Place~

One of my most favorite places I have EVER lived..is that place up there.
Its the cottage my parents bought when I was in about 8th grade I think
I was probly about 15 or so. There were so many great gatherings there.
The day I left home to start a whole new life and way of living, I left from
this place. Its on a beautiful lake, called Sunset Lake. When the sun goes
down it seems as though it sinks right into it. My Dad, looking off to his
right is looking towards the sunset. My mom is there with him. This was
taken shortly after they bought it. As time went by Dad added a deck
and it looked really different. That old picnic table they used to keep in
the yard in town, when they got this place there was of course a perfect
spot for it...

The time of year you can tell by the trees..There are no leaves..so its
either spring, which I think it is.. or fall... Its warm as my Mom doesnt
have a coat on. I dont know who took this.. I dont remember taking it.
Over on the left, you can see a post on the side, its the end of the dock
that my Dad would drive through the yard with his jeep and push in
back into the water, Midway in the middle of it ..it was at least 15 foot
long, were 2 big metal wheels..thats how up there you had to have the
docks so that when winter came you could pull it out because the lake
froze solid in the winter, we skated on that lake many times. My Dad
would hook up his snow plow and plow off a big area for us to skate on
and we had the best fun.. The whole family were very sporty-all skiied
and skated and swam,, water skiied.. and we all did it as a family, my
aunts and uncles and cousins. we all stayed together it seemed and had
some of the best times a family could I think, we enjoyed each other...

The cottage was 3 bedrooms, 2 up stairs..where mine was..downstairs
was the bathroom , bedroom, livingroom and kitchen/dining room and
the 3 windows you see behind my Dad is the porch- the 3 windows
behind my Mom are the diningroom ones.. There was a small back
porch too. This was a year round home at one time. My parents and I
stayed there all summer but during the winters only went there for a
family gathering of skating and skiing in the woods that were across the
road...The trees, most of them on that lake were White Birch-gorgeous
trees.. I loved it there.. I got to be there for 4 years at least during high
school..every summer we spent there, and I had the best tan of anyone
lol.. well Dad put out the dock then we had a small boat, and also was a
raft farther out in the water. Was easy to find a spot to lay and get a tan
I stayed toasted all summer and lasted half the winter.. then I would
go to Hawaii for a month and get the tan back till time to go back to the
cottage I had it made!!! My sister lived in Hawaii-still does as far as I
know. I would go and spend a month with her. I loved that too,but
then who wouldnt love a month in Hawaii :-)

I look at that picture and think of how great it would be to live there and
enjoy all the great seasons .enjoy that lake.. with the deck would be a
great spot..The ground was very level... so would be easy for a wheel
chair to move around specially my power one.build a ramp on the deck
or the back porch.. be great.. It was a really nice spot.. The lake had
some of the best fishing in it, like most of the lakes up there. I bet I
could name at least a dozen in Iron County and each lake had tons of
fish.. The Rivers up there, the Paint, Ontonogon, Brule.. somegreat
fishing.. I could take you on a fishing trip that you would NEVER forget,
ask my ex husband, he is an avid outdoorsman, fishing hunting all of it-
his words were.."I think I died and went to heaven"... :-) why its
called the Great NorthWoods.. God's Country....

Until I moved back up there in 89 I honestly didnt realize just how hilly
it is up there.. Then the more David said it I realized..well YEAH.. it
really is.!! There is one of the tallest ski jumps in the world up there i
think..they have all kinds of events there, also there are the Porcupine
Mountains.. now talk about a gorgeous place? they are over on the
western and northern part of the UP up by Lake Superior. Me being
in this chair well I could just roll up and down those hills now. The one
between the 2 towns was so steep they had to make another road
around to get to the town at the top of the hill lol.. I lived in the town
on the TOP of the hill of course. Times have taken its toll though. I got
a letter from a cousin..said those 4 nice little towns now were only
one..to be able to survive. There is no work there other than in the
stores. The mines have closed except for one I think. now its mostly
tourist..which smart people that DONT live there Go there for holidays
and ALWAYS go back..

I have considered moving back up there since I do have family up there.
It is a lovely place to live and visit. If I dont move back I am seriously
thinking of taking a trip up there just to be able to go home one more
time which I think all of us need to do every now and then- go back to
where we started just to compare and see where we have gone. done.
and maybe even see a little as to what is ahead...No way of really
knowing that but a trip home never hurt anyone.. And makes you
grateful maybe that you made it as far as you have. To spend time at
those old places that gave you all the good memories you have.. Its
always nice to see and that helps you remember..

Well Raelynn was here and went to the store for me.. and I need to try
to remember what goodies she got for me.. Lunch ? well was not a good
lunch day and they didnt get it here until after 2 in the afternoon..thats
pitiful. Who eats lunch at 2 ? These people that really depend on it.for
meds and all I wonder what they are doing. this has to throw everyone
stuff a loop..its cuz of the gas prices.. and they have to cut corners..so
less drivers and longer routes...thats their excuse anyway.. think once
in a while they would start out THIS way and go the opposite then I
could have it first for a while..well not me..but the others that REALLY
need it.. They deliver to 7 people in this building..so..its more than just
me.. well time to roll off to the Sunset lol nitey nite. Dont I wish? lol. :-)

Y'all have a good one now Y'hear? Luv ya and Thanks..:-)
ALways, Lois****

May God Bless you today,
I'm so honored to call you friend,
I pray the Lord will keep you safe,
Until I write again...

I liked that photo. It reminds me of our lake place, but much bigger. I love those sorts of memories.

When I was in highschool and junior high - we used to drive to visit a family we knew on an artificial lake near kansas city. They also had a house in kc. The father made wine which was very rich. The summer swimming was great. This was before air-conditioning.

    Good Morning :-)
That was a great place I would give anything to have it back now. Could have some wonderful parties and boat rides....on a pontoon of course.

The winters were just as much fun as the summer I wish I could get the photos off the old 8mm film I have. Some of the film is of us ice skating and my Dad driving the jeep all over the ice... Great times..and GREAT FOOD... lol
Hope y'all have a great day...
