~Old Card & a Short Story~

I came across this old funeral card. Its got to be of my GreatGrandpa.
My Grandpa, that came over from the Uk was named Sidney, he had
a son he named David. So that is one reason I think this is my Great
Grandpa... Look at the date..1917 Long time ago.. My mother had this
obit card and kept it all these years.. Its condition is wonderful. I like
seeing these old things that tie a family together.. Even though these
arent my BLOOD, I feel that they ARE my family and no one wants to try
to tell me otherwise.. lol... I wish I knew where the ones I know are still in
the UK are.. and that I could get in touch with them.. I think if I get this
ancestry.com thingie I can maybe do some good.. I know my cousin
Nancy is digging but I have NO idea how to get hold of her...

My Grandpa and GreatGrandpa I am assuming both were coal miners
in the UK or what ever it was they mined there. Tin maybe? im not sure.
My Grandpa and his brother Stanley and his brother Leonard came to
the states and how they ended up in Michigan I dont know.. Other than
its mining country..But iron ore and copper mines. Which is still under
ground mining that they had already done.. My Grandpa and Uncle
stanley settled in the lower part of Upper Michigan while my Uncle Len
went farther north to what is called the Copper Country. Beautiful up
there. But all 3 worked the mines all their lives once they moved here.
I dont know how long they were here before my grandma and aunties
and all the children came over. My mother said she was 8 when she
got to the USA..She had 4 spots on her arm from where she said she
had to get inoculated to be able to enter here. I can remember asking
her why she had 4 dots on her upper arm..and thats what she said...
my Grandparents had 8 children, my Uncle Stanley and Aunt Ethel
had 6 children, and Uncle Len and Aunt Annie, I am not sure, 4 I think.
If they all came at once..was quite a big crowd... :-)

The times back then were so amazing. this one of my GreatGrandma &
Grandpa in England, they look so proper.. and for 69 when he died
my grandpa looks to me, older than his age. Notice the hat on my
grandma.. is that a doozy or what? Guess back then a hat was a
hat.. I wonder what color it was ..this below is my GreatGrandmother and
my Grandmother I think, note date

This photo of my grandparents is so cute.. My 2 uncles and look at
my Grandpa..hes just looking off into space ..so dignified they tried
to make the photos back then.. Look at my grandma's dress.. I wish
they had color.. Be so nice to see that..not think that everything was
such a drab time. I am So glad styles have changed :-D

My grandpa.. was such a dear man. would tell me stories..maybe
thats why I like telling them so much.. I never hesitated to go to see
them or spend time with them.. I went every chance I got..
Short story for you:...
Every time I went to spend time with my Grandma and Grandpa. he
would tell me about these 2 babies that lived in the cellar. One was
named Lilly Ponds, and the other WaterLilly. They NEVER came out
of the basement and Grandpa said HE took care of them.. But they
stayed down there. And I believed him.. :-) suspiciously but I did.

I would go and peek down the stairs from the top..seeing nothing but
a cement wall at the bottom and that was all I could see from up the
top.. I decided one day I am gonna see if those babies were down in
that cellar.. I slowly went down the steps..looking carefully to see if I
could see them..Maybe they wanted to play with me.. I asked my
Grandpa that many times.. He said usually when I was there they had
gone to sleep and were hiding. They didnt want to be seen by anyone.
I looked from side to side carefully and saw nothing or no one.. I was
so disappointed but scared too.. I did have my doubts that my dear
Grandpa was fibbin to me.. Even though he assured me TWO babies
lived in that cellar!!

What he would do to prove to me that those babies were there is put
2 pieces of candy at the TOP of the steps.. and tell me to watch- the
candy will disappear.. I guess I must have sat in that room for hours one
day, steady watching that candy. It stayed there for the longest time. I
heard my grandma yell supper time, I went to eat , all 3 of us ate supper.
I went back to the stairs.. and yes, the candy was GONE!!! I ran over to
the steps..looked down and saw not ONE thing.. Well.. where did it go?
I saw no one heard nothing I looked all over, and we were in the kitchen.
I ran out to the kitchen and both my grandparents were there waiting for
me. I Yelled to Grandpa.. "the candy is gone !!!, the babies took it !!!"
Grandpa smiled at me, then at Grandma and Grandma said "dear,
Grandpa told you the babies get the candy." I told Grandma all
disapointed.. " BUT I wANTED TO SEE THEM..! I NEVER GET to SEE
THEM BABIES" I was upset. no more was said THAT day about those 2,
LillyPonds & WaterLilly, living in the cellar..This went on for a few years.
Grandpa died when I was 12. I think I still believed the babies were in the
cellar, LillyPonds and WaterLilly. Unusual names.. :-) nice to remember.

Years later, I told my Mom and Grandma about those 2 babies that lived
in the cellar.. my Grandma remembered.. she smiled at me ..put her hand
on my arm..said " Lois, Grandpa would sneak outside and go into the
basement from the outside and take that candy to make you think there
really WERE 2 babies living in that cellar". I knew he had to have done
something.. but I had NO idea that was HOW he did it..:-D I think about
those 2 babies that I honestly believed lived down there but refused to
play with me.. :-) I think when my mom told me they tore down Grandpa's
house that I still thought of those 2 babies that lived in the cellar.. How
gullible kids are hey? well I had NO reason NOT to believe him.. I KNOW
he had to have laughed and probly is now..watching me tell this story ..
like he did that day watching me sit and stare at those cellar steps for
hours and hours.. :-) It was such good times.. I still taste that delicious
licorice he would shove into my mouth when he tucked me in after
Gramma did..and say "SHHHHH, dont choke and dont tell Gramma" kiss
my forehead and was gone..These are my Dear Grandparents, from left
to right are my Uncles David, Ernest, my mother, Gordon, Aunt Phyllis,
Telfer, and Stanley, Only one missing is my Aunt Lillian.. Was so sad she
wasnt there .. she was missed.. She just couldnt attend.. I was about 10.

Well Im done for today I was worried about what I was going to write
about but seems something always comes to mind.. I am glad you
dont mind me going down memory lane like this. I just have the best
times.. This scanner is gettin me in big trubble.. but I love it.. so much
easier to scan a photo than take a picture of a picture.. I was pleased
that the pics of the shower chair came out so good I used my cam...

Lunch today? well they did pretty good..was sausage and cabbage
and of course had carrots in but I dug them out.. was good and I ate
most of it.. Had some really bitter puckery grapes for desert.. I just
dont like fruit for desert.. and I hate when they send jello with fruit in
it.. Just not for me.. Im not famished tonite.. and I didnt get alot done
today , So desert ONLY search mode is on.. and I bid you ,,, yes?
nitey nite !!! :-)

Y'all have a good one now Y'hear? love ya & thanks.. :-)
ALways, Lois****

May God Bless you today,
I'm so honored to call you friend,
I pray the Lord will keep you safe,
Until I write again...

I remember in the mid- 1930s my dad took early 16mm color movies of my grandparents. They did not know you could move. Our family home movies are literally the history of color film. I have all sorts of photo albums from the 1930s and 1940s. My dad also took movies of me around 1937 which were used in movie theater advertising. My brother may have all the old movies on a video for vcr. I'll ask him if he has dvd's yet.

Enjoyable photos. The funeral card was particularly interesting. Was that location called "Know-go-bye?"

Most of my 19th century relatives were farmers. I have also noticed that the men in that time in their 50s and 60s who worked out in the fields all day for a lifetime looked much older than they really were.
