~Names~
I was thinking about the reply I made to a comment today about the name Dorothy and how the older names just arent used as much any more they are coming up with some really lets say "unusual" ones.. My Grandmother up there by the car, her name was Ruby Dehlia..wasn't that a great name? She was so elegant..what a lady. She was the one that taught me how to knit. She was wonderful at any kind of handwork. From hand made button holes to some of the most gorgeous tatted ladys handkerchiefs.. I still have some she did.. The last I remember I think I was about maybe 13 or 14 when she died, I tried to look it up but I just couldnt find it in my mothers date book..But I remember looking at her hands..she had arthritis just awful and her finger joints were so swollen yet she still did her "hand work" as she called it.. "If I didn't keep my hands working Lois, then they would really stiffen up and get lazy, I have to keep them and me going" and would pat my hand and continue to push that tatting shuttle thru the lace she made, and it was lovely. She lived in that huge 2 story house, and the last 10 years of her life never ventured upstairs..but she knew where EVERY single thing was that was up there..She made a point of having her housekeeper tell her exactly where she put something. And she always knew. I would test her from time to time and bring something down from up there just to see if she knew where I got it.. And EVERY time.. she knew EXACTLY where I got it from..She was an amazing lady.. And so beautiful . and I think her name matched her You see the car up there ..well its a 49 ford..I found the ad my dad put in the paper..My mother kept all these things.. I thought was so nice that there is the car..and Grandmother and sadly the ad where my Dad had to sell it.. I KNOW that car ran perfectly, was kept in a garage, and my Dad being a mechanic..well it RAN very good.. I have NO doubts lol... My Grandmother was dressed for the centennial that was going on at the time I believe..100 years the town of Stambo, was old.. Long time. They had this sort of re enactment of the people when they first moved there and the clothes..like what my Grandmother has on.. The parade was wonderful, and she drove this car in the parade of old cars that is In the background you can see the school where I went..and got SO SMART lol :-) I honestly did NOT mind school at all..I still enjoy learning and digging into my head to see what kind of trivia I can remember. The very center building is the band and woodworking building..Off to the right a bit you can see a flat roof..thats the high school I attended At the very end of this main street of our little town was where they put the Christmas tree every year.. Sadly this town is no longer listed as a town..was annexed into the one at the bottom of the hill..they still use the schools though..There is a newer grade school that was built up there by the others only on the left, and they tore down that huge Band Building where I sat many many days tooting on that bloomin Clarinet and NEVER improved LOL..I shoulda took piano lessons..I have NO idea why I didnt.. I sure wish I had now.. I love to listen to piano..specially rag time, some happy music... Names have been changed to protect the innocent hahaha..no no.. I had to say that though..I remember that old TV show Drag Net.. "THIS IS THE CITY, Los Angeles, California" I loved that show..was really serious but funny ..That Jack Webb he was a corker lol..So stern and serious. Compared to now, and the crime shows..well..I prefer Dragnet any day than some of the stuff I see on TV now..I go from channel to channel and thats all I see is murder, and blood and CRAP.. naaa I'll watch the oldies or animal planet lol.. well I did like the travel channel and discovery when I had those though. But since I was writin about names that came to mind.. Trivia ..I did love that game..but I was NOT that good at it..can you believe that??? :-) I had to demote myself to just a fan,, I have to see if my electric drops back down..Its tripled..There is AC out in the hallway here, its nice and cool..Theres a guy used to live down in the center hallway, he would open his door and put a fan there and suck all the cool out of the hall into his apartment ..well ..he got in big trouble for that once, and you know who saw that..(the nosey neighbor) well I kinda dont blame him I am curious to see how much my electric goes down.. This fan is just a little clippie and I put it here on my desk while I am on here then when I go to bed I take it over there.. Its got a good cover over the blades..and its only a small plastic one but I still wouldnt want this boy of mine getting hurt on it either. So I will know in a month, I sure hope its not REAL hot.. I just somehow have doubts that this little fan, its only about 8 inches across, will keep it ok in here ..well as long as it keeps the air stirred I guess and I can still BREATHE lol.. it will be ok..It does put out quite a bit for as small as it is.. Well I made the mistake of trying lunch today..was brussel sprouts and Chicken..well needless to say , it did NOT set very well and I AM NOT going to go out to the kitchen tonite.. I got a soda a while ago..and thats gonna be it..I have a bad feeling though I may be up and down for awhile so I might just watch tv in my chair for a few just to save dragging myself on and off that bed 90 times making these "Trips" lol... never fails hey? always something. ha! fooled Dutch..he headed out that way..he will surely think something is wrong now when I just head over to the bed..:-)..Nitey Nite :-) Y'all have a good one now Y'hear? Luv Ya and Thanks.. Always, Lois **** May God Bless you today, I'm so honored to call you friend, I pray the Lord will keep you safe, Until I write again... | |||

My house was built in 1910 and looks like those in your top photo. Currently, I am painting the outside of the house Ivory, white trim and orange door.
As I think about the past, I remember in the 40s and 50s, how people hade tvs but not much furniture.
My dad was always getting a new car every couple of years. In the US, we have a radio program called car talk on the public radio. You can phone in problems with your car and they will give suggestions for a solution. My daughter used to to do that as a field engineer for Ford. I think she should get a radio program similar to car talk.

Hi Lois
Something about those old cars - used to run like swiss watches never missed a beat.
History is wonderful! great to look back on and appreciate what our forebears went through to get our generations to where they are today. Yes Lois unfortunately change is the only constant for many of the small towns which either disappear completely or are absorbed into other centres. I guess you could call it progress but there are other names for it as well; like loss of community, loss of identity etc.
My late mother -in-law used to make lace, do tating and all those other handy crafty type of things. I suspect that the present generation has not learned a fraction of those skills mainly because they are no longer part of everyday life and besides apart from a few, who really has the time to spend on such labours of love.
Talking of keeping cool a lady I was on a bus with recently had a collar which she used to put around her neck at the beginning of the day and it kept her cool all day. Apparently she used to soak the collar in a handbasin of water overnight and the as the day went by the water would evaporate and have a cooling effect. Some fairly modern material apparently.
Think she got it at a travel shop. She reckoned it was just great. Maybe something like that would work for you during your really hot weather.
Who knows you could be moving into the space age.
Anyway have a good one, and make fun of it whatever you are doing.
Regards
RJ

Speaking of Car Talk, I went to Tom and Ray's garage a few times in the 80s. The window shades of their office in Harvard Square really do have Dewey, Cheetem, and Howe printed on them.
There are many names in my family that have been used for generations. We have had a continuous branching lines of Catherine variations for more than 200 years, and quite a few women named Dorothy. During the 19th century we had lots of Fannies, both as a nickname for Frances and as a given name. I had two great grand aunt Fannies who lived over 100 years, both outlived by great grand aunt Nellie (Given name Nell, not Eleanor).
For some reason nobody in my generation of cousins have named their daughters Fanny. No doubt our daughters are relieved.
The strangest name in my family is a very uncommon biblical name. I don't want to mention it because it would identify my relatives. The extraordinary thing is that there have been 13 consecutive generations of fathers and sons with this name. Women who marry these men feel a certain unfair pressure to have a son to keep the line going.

Good Morning~!~
My parents bought their house for 500 dollars, back about 1930's. I remember watching the TV anntenae's go up through the town and someone always commented about so & so had a tv lol..I liked the radio time tho...
That sounds like a good idea RJ, I have heard about some that have beans or grain in them for heat and stress but not cooling, that sounds good...
My Grandfathers were Irwell and Sidney, I looked at the family tree and was amazed that I found my name quite a few times, One of my ancestors testified at a witch trial in Salem it says as the family first settled up there... Its very interesting reading..what surprises me is the influence that our ancestors really have on us even now.
We had a great radio show where we could call in and sell something or buy it..Telephone Time was called..Great service too...
Nothing like the good old days..
Hope y'all have a good one... I got up very late today, was rough nite..:-( but Im UP finally!!! :-)
I am so pleased to hear from all of you ..thanks bunches hey?
Always, Lois****

Dear Lois,
Ah, nostalgia isn't what it used to be!!! lol
My Grandad was Herbert Empson Ridler, - Bert, my uncle was also Herbert, also Bert, so, to avoid confusion when they were home together, my grandma called my uncle Treb and that is how he was always known.
Loved the pics, thanks, Hon. They are always interesting.
Take care, Hon, lots of love and hugs from
Raife
