~Jammin~
I was talking to a friend of mine that was telling me about
the fresh jam they were making and had made. It almost
made my mouth water.. I havent made homemade jam in
a very long time.. My very best favorite is raspberry, then
strawberry. I used to buy crates of them and make as many
pints of it as I could.. Homemade jam of whatever kind is
very addictive.. The stuff that's sold in the stores is NO
comparison.. And whats surprising..its really easy to make.
As my mother got older she started making freezer jam, it
lasts a long time..
When I was young, I went all summer long and picked berries,
from raspberries, to blueberries, strawberries, any kind that I
could get to.. My Dad was an avid and dedicated berry picker,
my mom enjoyed picking berries but I honestly think she preferred
making the jam and leave the berry picking up to my dad and I...
And we eagerly went every time we could.. I loved to hear my
And we eagerly went every time we could.. I loved to hear my
mother call me awake saying "LOIS! Dad is going to pick
berries..if you want to go, get up!" Well..I think I was up, dressed
and fed and out in the jeep way before my dad even knew I was
up... We had some of the best times picking berries...
I think those times we spent wandering our favorite berry sites
was some of the most learning times but I didn't know it then..We
would talk about everything as we picked the berries, about me,
school, my friends, I think it was how my Dad really got to know
me and by that he knew what things to tell me.. what lessons to
teach me that would carry me through my life...He was always
one with a Lesson in almost everything that happened.. even with
berry picking, the lesson was sharing....
His lesson was to take some, but leave some for the others.. meaning
of course the animals.. His words were "Lois, the animals could eat
every berry, leave nothing for us, we wouldn't know then just how
wonderful these berries are, how sweet, tasty, they shared with us"
It was my Dads way of teaching me to share and to think of others as
well , not just my own needs and wants. "Leave some berries, Lois,
for the animals and birds that havent found them yet..Then the next
time we come I bet they will have left some for us too".. This was my
Dads teachings.. and I am grateful that he did this then..even though
back then I didn't know that he was teaching me, guiding me, I was
just enjoying the time out in the woods with my Dad.. Im so glad NOW
that I went.. He was a wise man..and I think he taught me well...
I did get a call today from Heidi, bless her heart she has been in
hospital with pneumonia..very sick..she still is coughing I could hear
her...and she has a couple other clients that need a little more
attention..which I understand.. She said she will be here tomorrow
and she will be coming bearing gifts! SKIRTS .! I am so pleased!
I got all these new tops from my sister, I need some new skirts! I
cant keep taking photos in the same clothes, I did notice I don't
think I have taken very very few in the same clothes ...which is a
good thing .. I think that is one of the reasons I love to sew, I love
clothes..well certain kinds.. some things Ive seen well..I wouldn't
wear them anywhere!.. It will be good to see her..Tomorrow will be
a busy day .. Penny will be here, Heidi, and BigDaddy Ken... ...
every time I say the name Ken I think Of that hilarious movie with
John Cleese and Jaime Lee Curtis, A Fish Called Wanda.. that
was so funny..and there was a guy in it named Ken that was a
real buggar.. Good movie..if you havent seen it..do.. Its an oldie
but a goodie..John Cleese is a favorite of mine..His Fawlty
Towers was a riot..
Well time to end this for today and get some dinner and out of
this chair, my butt tells me its time.. I have to listen "Nitey Nite"
Y'all have a good one now, Y'hear? love ya.. and THANKS!!! :-)
Always, Lois ****
God Bless you, is my prayer today,
I'm so honored to call you "friend";
I pray the Lord will keep you safe,
Until I write again.....

we had a fruit cellar when I was growing up. My mother would can peaches. Once in a while a jar would explode. I used to freeze tomatillos to make salsa verde and callalloo which is carribean spinach. If somebody from the UK reads this they may also grow and freeze callalloo.

Hi, Honey,
There is nothing quite as sociable as hanging like grim Death to the branch of a Mountain Ash (We call them Rowans here) while Management picks the berries to make Rowan Jelly!! Then, of course, the berries have to be "strigged" (taken off the stalks). We had already collected Crab Apples from the Moor. They have to be quartered and boiled up with an equal weight of Rowans to make the juice to make the jelly.
The great thing about Crab Apples is that they are about 200% Pectin!!! So the jelly sets like concrete!! Oh, yes, put about a pound of sugar to every pint of juice - and don't squeeze the bag that the fruit pulp is in or your jelly will be cloudy. Sorry about the pounds, we work by weight here, not cups.
We open freeze our peas on a tray and then bag them up when they are well frozen. We never try to preserve stick beans, though. They NEVER taste as good as when they are sliced and cooked straight off the vine - with a LARGE dollop of butter!! We try to take things "in season" and enjoy them at their best.
Enough foodie talk!! ;o) Take care, Honey, L.O.L. & G.B.H. from
Raife
