~Motel Stories~
A friend mentioned to me about writing a story about
my time in Houston as a motel manager.. There were
5 in all that I managed at one time or another.. 2 were
side by side on Old Galveston Road, I can only remember
the name of one of them, the Muldar, which only had
6 rooms.. The one next door to it had 15. There was a
small field between them.. First I had the Muldar, then
Mr. Lane bought the one next to it and I moved over
to that one and managed them both from there.. All
of the motels had living quarters as the managers were
on call 24-7.. And trust me it was a 24-7 job... Always
something going on... Every day was a story in itself
just about... no matter which motel it was...
The biggest, as far as number of rooms was the Blue
Top, it was on Telephone Road.. It was a BUSY place.
Specially on the week ends.. Very few people know
that there are 2 rates for some motels. We called a
4 hour stay a short stay, the other was an overnight.
Being the Blue Top was across the street from a lot
Being the Blue Top was across the street from a lot
of strip clubs our clientele were usually on a time limit
and rented a room sometimes just for an hour.. The
desk clerk had to watch the cars, if someone rented
a room, if we saw that car leave, we wrote down the
liscense plate, they were considered checked out...
The room was cleaned and re-rented. I rented one
room over 16 times one Friday night :-)
One Saturday morning the maid came into my office
just scared to death and nervous and all upset.. I
could hardly understand what was wrong! I followed
her to room number 45, I will never forget the room
number.. I opened the door and there was a man
laying on the bed, dead.. Under neath you could see
a huge pool of blood.. and there was blood all over
the walls.. It was an awful sight.. The man had killed
himself.. with a gun.. but no one heard the shot... It
was something I will never forget OR WANT to
ever see again....
There was always something going on.. and it was a
most interesting job... I liked meeting all the different
types of people.. Some of the rooms were small apts.
just an efficiency type.. and they rented out by the
week and I got to know lots of them. These were NOT
fancy motels.. just clean and had a bed and bathroom..
That's why they rented so cheap. I always told my
customers to go and see the room before they paid
for it as I would NOT refund their money once it was
paid... This was a RULE...
One man came, rented a room, agreed to the terms..
left, and 10 minutes later came back and said "The
room is no good, its not nice enough, I want my
money back." I reminded him of the terms that he
agreed to.. Well the man refused to leave and the
more time I argued with him the more out of control
he got. I was there by myself, which usually someone
was around... The next thing I knew the man pulled
out this huge knife! I didn't know what to do.. I just
stood there for a second..too scared to do anything!
The next sound I hear is the door crashing open and
The next sound I hear is the door crashing open and
I see this customer go to the ground as one of my
weekly residents, named Bobby, was punching the
daylights out of him as he grabbed the knife and
tossed it to the side... The customer screams that
he is calling the police, which I informed him were
already on the way... When the cops got there they
took the customer to jail for pulling that knife on
me.. And I think to the hospital to repair the damage
Bobby had inflicted on him... I was MOST grateful
to Bobby for coming to my rescue.. I made him a nice
fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings...
There are so many stories connected to the motel
industry.. Its a most interesting job.. I enjoyed it..
I have a ton of stories.. If you ever go to Houston,
find Telephone Road... There is a restaurant, was
just down the street from the Blue Top, called the
Tel Wink, on Saturdays they HAD the best potato
soup anywhere !! :-) All their food was great :-)
Speaking of food I have a Cornish hen and corn
Speaking of food I have a Cornish hen and corn
bread dressing in the oven.. Should be done pretty
soon and I havta eat so I can take my pills... :-)
Plus I am a tad hungry.,. So, that means post time
and for my GORGEOUS WEEBLE "I shall return!"
Y'all have a good one now, Y'hear? luv ya and thanks!
Always, Lois ****

Hi, Honey,
When you write that book, they tell me that writing the first draft is the easy bit! What takes the blood, sweat, toil and tears is polishing the stuff you have written after the first stab at it. An author friend of mine, who has had six or seven books published, tells me that that is the way of it. You pass your work around to friends for their criticism and correct and polish til you feel you can't improve it, then you send it off to lots of publishers and pray!
Hope all that doesn't sound too pessimistic. You really have a gift for writing, so give it a go!
Take care, Honey,
Luv Ya,
Raife.
